Former PEMEX Director Carlos Treviño Detained in the US

Treviño led PEMEX between 2017 and 2018 during the administration of Enrique Peña Nieto, having previously served as director of administration. He is accused of receiving more than MX$4 million (US$212,705) in bribes from Braskem, an Odebrecht subsidiary. These bribes were allegedly in exchange for favoring the Etileno XXI petrochemical project.

President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed the arrest of Carlos Treviño, a former director of PEMEX, in the United States. He will be deported to Mexico to face corruption charges related to the Odebrecht case. Sheinbaum stated that Treviño will “finally be found and will be judged in Mexico.” The detention is a result of an extradition request issued five years ago.

The accusations are linked to the testimony of Emilio Lozoya, who also served as a former director of PEMEX. Lozoya, who is currently under house arrest, accused Treviño of being in charge of operating the contracts with Braskem.

The former official had an arrest warrant, a migratory alert from the National Migration Institute (INM), and a red notice from Interpol for crimes including bribery, criminal association, and money laundering. The president emphasized that his capture is a significant step in the fight against impunity in high-profile corruption cases.

Treviño’s attorney, Óscar Zamudio, stated that the arrest was made by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Texas for a migratory irregularity. The defense claims that the Interpol red notice no longer exists and that Treviño has a request for political asylum. However, the attorney admits that Treviño could still be deported due to his migratory status.
